The 5th Annual Conference of the Fintech Discipline in China successfully Held

The Fifth Annual Conference for the Fintech Discipline in China co-organized by our school, the School of Finance of Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE), and Higher Education Press was successfully held in Chengdu on 18 July 2021. Around 120 teacher representatives from over 70 educational institutions across the country participated in the event.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Qingshuang Yin, vice president of SWUFE, delivered a welcome address, extending the warmest welcome to all the experts and scholars present at the event on behalf of SWUFE. He pointed out that fintech is a force that can transform the world, and it develops and renovates continuously amid social changes. Through broader and deeper spreading and application, it facilitates the generation of new formats, dynamics, and ecologies. Yet, a significant proposition we should ponder is precisely how to see the trend of the times and follow it. Mr. Peng Zhao, chief of the Economics Branch of Higher Education Press, addressed behalf of the co-organizers.

Prof. Jianjun Li, secretary-general of the Annual Conference of the Fintech Discipline in China and Dean of the School of Finance, CUFE, addressed the audience and delivered a keynote speech. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to SWUFE and Higher Education Press for their services for this event. Then he made a keynote speech -Financial Technology and the Urban-Rural Income Gap. He demonstrated the relationship between the development of fintech and the urban-rural income gap at the theoretical level and revealed the internal logical mechanism; at the empirical level, he creatively designed a China prefecture/municipal-level fintech development index, measured its structural characteristics, examined the effect of fintech development on shrinking the income gap, and found the investment channel and income channel for migrant rural workers by which fintech can improve the urban-rural income gap.


Then, Prof. Mengnan Zhu, deputy dean of the School of Economics, Xiamen University, and member of the National Supervisory Committee for Professional Degrees in Finance, Prof. Yan Shen, deputy director of the Institute of Digital Finance, Peking University, and Prof. Qing Li, deputy dean of the School of Economic Information Engineering, SWUFE, delivered keynote speeches respectively. In his speech entitled the Development of Financial Technologies and the Financial Technology Discipline, Prof. Mengnan Zhu introduced the latest progress in the practice and development of fintech and the five-year plan of national department authorities for the fintech discipline. Prof. Yan Shen conducted an in-depth analysis of big data privacy protection amid the development of fintech in her speech-themed Financial Technology and Big Data Analysis and Governance. Prof. Qing Li introduced the construction of the fintech discipline and talent cultivation status through cooperation among enterprises, universities, and research institutes at SWUFE in his speech entitled Practice in and Thinking on Financial Technology at SWUFE.

 During the seminar session, nine scholars from Renmin University of China, the University of California, Berkeley, Wuhan University, Jinan University, and SWUFE made reports on their respective research papers, sharing academic achievements. Moreover, there was also a forum for deans of the finance discipline from higher education institutions. The chiefs of the finance discipline from universities including Emlyon Business School, Xiamen University, Sichuan University, Jinan University, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, University of International Business and Economics, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chongqing University, Southwest Agricultural University, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, SWUFE and CUFE, had in-depth discussions about the construction and development of the finance discipline, first-class majors and courses.

Around 120 teachers from over 70 schools attended the event, expressing their views about the development of fintech and the construction of the fintech discipline, and charting a blueprint for the future development of the discipline. After the forum, the representatives visited the university history museum and currency & finance museum of SWUFE, wrapping up the annual event.

 The Annual Conference of the Fintech Discipline in China is an organization co-launched by our university and Peking University in 2017. It is now participated in by over 70 schools across the country. Through five years of construction, it has become a leading platform for exchanges among domestic university scholars from the fintech discipline.
