On December 15, the Beijing Municipal People’s Government announced the winners of the 16th Beijing Outstanding Achievement Award in Philosophy and Social Sciences. The paper “Women’s Political Status and the Sex Ratio in the Population at Birth—An Empirical Study Based on County-Level Data 1950-2000”, written by our school’s assistant professor Wuyue You together with Professor Yang Yao of Peking University and published in the fourth issue of the Social Sciences in China in 2020, won the second prize.
By collecting and reorganizing information from the local records of more than 1,700 counties in China compiled in two successive rounds after 1949, and combining it with relevant census and other data, the paper examines the influences of the enhanced political rights of Chinese women in the second half of the twentieth century on improving their right to subsistence and quality of life.
