Hua Jingdong, Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank, delivered a lecture titled “How to Promote Sustainable Development Through Bonds” at the underground lecture hall of the library of CUFE’s Shahe Campus at 14:00 on December 13. CUFE Vice President Shi Jianping, Director of the Research Management Office Jia Yuge, Party Secretary Mao Jing and Deputy Party Secretary Li Junfeng of the School of Finance attended the event, along with more than 200 students.

Mr. Hua Jingdong is Vice President and Treasurer of the World Bank. He manages around US$200 billion debt portfolio and US$170 billion current asset portfolio for the World Bank Group; provides hedging and risk management for US$600 billion transactions, and financial services to 73 central banks, country-specific funds and pension funds. Mr. Hua gave an overall introduction of the World Bank and its development history to the students by starting with the question - What is the World Bank? He described the structure and evolution of the capital markets of China, America and Europe, and particularly talked about the development status of the bond markets. Global bond issues by the World Bank aim to help developing and underdeveloped countries to fulfill sustainable development and address the issue of abject poverty through bonds. He put special emphasis on the importance of innovation and expounded on the three innovation programs of the World Bank: global bonds, green bonds and bond issues based on the blockchain technology. Finally, based on his years of work experience with the World Bank, Mr. Hua introduced to the students the job requirements for working at the institution and voiced his hope for college students on campus. His message to the students was that: It is important to have greater ambitions to contribute to your country and the world, be less anxious to seek quick success and instant benefits, devote yourselves to national and global development, and firmly bear in mind your mission and responsibility as young financial talents.

During the Q&A session, Mr. Hua answered questions from the students one by one, and spoke highly of the financial competences of CUFE’s students for their accurate and incisive questions.

After the Q&A session, Vice President Shi Jianping made comments on the event. He first thanked Mr. Hua for taking time out of his busy schedule to share his experience, and pointed out that Mr. Hua’s lecture was of great guiding significance to helping the students understand international financial markets, take the pulse of global economic development, broaden their international perspective, and effectively study specialized courses. He also expressed his hope that students could both study diligently, build personal skills, but also have great ambitions; work hard for their loved ones, but also devote themselves voluntarily to greater causes; be honest, responsible, and ready to innovate in a new era, and make contributions to the realization of the Chinese Dream of great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
